Texas consumer guide
Know what to expect from mold work.
Clear scope, qualified providers and useful records help you make informed decisions. These are the main protections and practical steps to know when hiring a mold professional in Texas.
1. Check the license.
Verify the individual and company through TDLR's license search when licensing is required. Check the type of license and current status, not just the number in an advertisement.
2. Receive the consumer information sheet.
Licensed assessors and remediators must give the Consumer Mold Information Sheet to the client and, if different, the property owner before mold-related work begins.
3. Understand the scope and clearance criteria.
Before agreeing to work, ask what will be inspected, why samples are proposed, what the written deliverable includes and what further visits could cost. For remediation, understand the protocol, the contractor's work plan and the passing criteria before cleanup starts.
4. Keep assessment and remediation independent.
Texas generally prohibits a license holder from assessing and remediating the same project. Moldo provides assessment and consulting; the remediation contractor carries out the cleanup.
5. Keep the project records.
Save agreements, photos, repair records, reports and any completed CMDR. Written records help with follow-up, future property questions and a sale.
Renting the property?
Report leaks or mold concerns to the landlord promptly, follow up in writing and keep a copy with dated photos. TDLR regulates mold service providers; it does not inspect homes or require a landlord to clean up mold. Its renter guidance points to local code or health offices and tenant-rights resources for the appropriate next step.
Concerned about a provider?
If you believe a mold provider violated Texas licensing rules, you can file a complaint with TDLR. Include the records that explain what happened.
This is a general Texas guide. Licensing exemptions and legal options depend on the circumstances; use the linked state guidance for details.
